''Anna Liisa'' is Minna Canth's play from 1895 which deputed in Finnish. It was premiered at the Finnish Theatre and has since been shown repeatedly in different theaters.
Canth's second tragedy deals with the murder of a child by the play's protagonist Anna-Liisa. She had a relationship with slave Mikko and gave birth to his illegitimate child and in a panic she kills the child. The incident had been kept a secret and about five years pass and Anna-Liisa becomes engaged to be married to Johannes when Mikko returns again and asks Anna-Lisa to marry him, meanwhile threatening to reveal the child's murder. Anna-Liisa eventually ends up revealing the past event publicly and is prepared to receive punishment from society and the Law. ''Anna Liisa'' was Canth's last play.
Anna-Liisa, guilty of the murder of her child, chooses justice for her actions rather than marry man she does not love. The work at the end of a priest to preach to him for the good of forgiveness. However, the audience realizes that Mikko, father of the child, gets away scott free and the guilt is left alone a woman to bear.
The play has also been made in a number of films.
